The other day I asked Fausto Majistral about the future of the Maltese blogosphere, and he said that it would be nice to have some collaborative projects. Well that was all the impetus I needed to do something I've been thinking about for a little while: host a Karnival tal-Bloggijiet (did we ever decide on the plural of blogg?).
Here's how it works: I put up a title, and you go and write a post in your blog with that theme. Then you let me know about the post. Old posts count too, you don't have to write a new post specifically for the Karnival. After a certain amount of time, I put up a post with a list of all the links that people have sent me. Then everyone gets to go around reading what everyone else wrote :-)
In the tradition of the bloggosfera, this is a bilingual Karnival, Maltese and English both welcome, just not in the same sentence, please, (unless you're writing in the Bollettino style, in which case, bring it on) ;-) If you usually blog in one language, you could look on the Karnival as an excuse to write a post in the other language. Or, hey, write the same post in both, just for fun! (Immanuel does this already, and Gybexi has done it too).
Ok, here's the first subject, a general one to get our toes wet:
A post that embodies the spirit of your blog.Everyone has their unique writing style, their own reasons for blogging, and their own thoughts to convey. A blog is as unique as its author, and the variety in the bloggosfera is fascinating.
This first Karnival is a chance to show off a post that you are particularly proud of, or enjoyed writing, or are pleased with the way it turned out, or with the response it provoked. Maybe it was a thoughtful analysis of a political situation, a critical review of a CD, a hilarious account of an adventure, or a piece of writing raw with emotion - anything goes, just show us what you're made of.
If you run multiple blogs, feel free to submit one for each blog :-) This is also a good way to point out posts that may have been written before the bloggosfera really came together, or before your blog in particular was "discovered".
Let me know by commenting here (or by email to maltagirl-at-gmail-dot-com) if you have a post for the Karnival. Just include a link to your post.
Today is Tuesday, 7th June... on Monday 13th June I'll put up the list of links, to give a chance to people who write on the weekends.
I'm looking forward to reading everyone's entries - I hope you participate.
Enjoy :-)
P.S. If anyone has any ideas about the Karnival, suggestions for topics, etc. etc. etc. please comment. I've never hosted a carnival before! Also, if this takes off (I hope it will) then there's no reason why I should always host it - so if anyone wants to volunteer to host an edition, go ahead. I think that having one Karnival per week would be cool, or do you think it should be every two weeks, or monthly?

I would have written something specifically for the Carnival but the deadline is a little tight. I'll definitely submit something but I'm going to give it a couple of days to see whether I'll have time to write something specifically. Cheers for doing this!

Thanks Bertu!
Sharon, there's always the next one :-) I didn't want to leave it tooooooo long since this was the first time. In three hours we already have two submissions and a promise, things are looking good :-D
Posted by: MaltaGirl | June 07, 2005 at 19:02
My first post might need some updating. But it's the one that fits best with the "requirement" of this Carnival. I'll try to make an update by the deadline.

Suggestion for the next carnival:
Karnival tal-Maltin ta' barra
Which, of course, will not be only open to Maltin ta' barra but also to Maltin ta' Malta.

MaltaGrrl this is a great idea, I'm very much new to the blogging world so er I don't really know how to "find the bloggosfera"!!! There, I feel better admitting my ignorance:) Any tips? Anyone?
Posted by: Athena | June 08, 2005 at 17:50
Fausto, I think that would be a cool subject, I'm already mentally writing the blurb. (Maltin ta' Barra - cowardice or common sense, traitors or pioneers? heheheh...)
Gakbu, forsi l-hwienet tal-cotba iaraw kabsa fisc-sciri ta' cotba Pratcetici uara dan! Riguard il-flout, f'ideik, ia bniedem ta' mohhta'trekuihed (onetrackmind).
Athena, to find the bloggosfera, just go to AboutMalta's list of blogs. To be found by the bloggosfera, comment on other people's blogs, engage others in dialogue, talk about other people's blogs on your blog, link to other blogs, generally become one with the collective, muahahahaha :-)

Hehe thanks:) Okay here's another silly question: I know there's some way of keeping track of blogs you read. Anyone know how to do this? There should be something which lets me know when all my fave blogs are updated right?
Aaaah I feel helpless.

I use bloglines.com (it's called an aggregator). You sign up and add your favourite blogs. Feel free to email me if you have more questions. maltagirl-at-gmail-dot-com.

MaltaGirl,
That's a difficult one... a single bloggata capturing the spirit of the whole blog... if you don't mind, here are two suggestions, I'll let you choose which one you think better reflects my style of blogging!

Hey, I think I want copyright AND royalties over Maltin ta' Barra :)

You shall have it, madam, you shall have it.
Just bear in mind that 10% of nothing is still nothing ;-)

Here's mine. I chose my very first blog out of nostalgia. It was called The Kinnie Generation and is found at the foot of this link http://akkuza.blogspot.com/2005_03_06_akkuza_archive.html
(I know the tag should begin with href etc etc but Ken I am still learning and when I am in a Comments box I cannot scroll back to find out what the hell it was again!)

Thanks Twanny and Jacques :-)

Jacques,
1. copy the code (either using the computer, or write it down on paper) and paste it/type it in the comments.
2. If the code was on a comment on Blogger (I think it was), after you click "Post a Comment", in the screen that follows, you can click on the line saying "kenneth said..." and it will collapse (that comment will "hide"), enabling you to hide all the irrelevant comments whilst leaving the comment with the code intact.

I know that the following is more of a diary entry which people may loathe, but I think it qualifies in this initiative (why "Carnival"?)
I'm submitting Part 1 of the "diary entries" of my recent short-stay in Gozo.
http://wizgha.blogspot.com/2005/05/zen-and-art-of-lightbulb-maintenance_30.html
I think embodies my the style (and tone) of writing I usually employ whenever contributing to my blog. It also says quite a lot about me: my raves with the public transport systems, my raves with how most of the tourists are morons, and also my insect phobia. These are elements which I've featured on my blog in the past.
If I find anything more suitable, I will submit it.
I'm not sure if the above submitted post meets the criteria or not. In that case, please let me know and feel free to ignore it.
Posted by: Kenneth | June 10, 2005 at 15:41
(You may ignore the submitted blog entry, but you should ignore the myriad silly mistakes in my previous comment.)
Posted by: Kenneth | June 10, 2005 at 15:44
Your previous comment looks perfectly fine to me ;-)
I believe that the only criteria for the Karnival are that your post have something to do with the Karnival's title, and that you employ a reasonable standard of grammar in English or Maltese, and I think you accomplished both of those. You actually had some Maltese quotes, WITH translation into English, very nice, and I'll overlook the two incidents of bilingual sentences.
In any case, the "criteria" are a lot like the Malta Highway Code. There, but treated more like guidelines, heheheh.
No excuses, you WILL be in the Karnival! Muahahahahaha!
Posted by: MaltaGirl | June 10, 2005 at 15:54
Grazzi Mark!
And to answer Kenneth's question "Why "Carnival"?" well, there doesn't seem to be any definitive articles out there, but from what I can gather it all started here with the "Carnival of the Vanities". I imagine this is a play on "The Bonfire of the Vanities".
