It's that time of year again - this weekend will see around five hundred musical theatre students singing their hearts out on the stage at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.
The ensemble is performing seventeen songs, plus two sung only by the adult class (cos we're special!) and three sung only by the Early Stages kids (because 4 to 6-year olds are a bit young to be on stage for two hours, so they just come on to sing their songs half-way through, and then leave).
This is Production Week, which means rehearsals every day - Sunday was the first Big Rehearsal with everyone all to together, from the various Stagecoach schools all over Malta. It wasn't THAT bad, considering it was our first one!
Tonight us adults had some more rehearsing as part of our usual Monday night session, and rehearsals in the MCC start tomorrow night.
I'm very much looking forward to the show, I love performing...
When we started rehearsals a few weeks ago, the singing teacher Miss Denise came up to Michael and I and said, "I understand that it is something of a tradition to have you two sing a duet during Vocal Aid..." lol... so Mike and I are singing "Sunrise Sunset" from Fiddler On The Roof.
It feels amazing to be standing there, singing, with hundreds of people backing you up!
I also enjoy singing as part of the ensemble because it's a nice feeling to be part of something bigger than you, and the biggest buzz comes when we manage to pull off something spectacular such as multi-part harmony or a piece with lots of call-and-response *grin*
The kids are doing a great job, and at times us grown-ups are having problems matching them in terms of volume and sheer energy (oh the shame).
All (or nearly all) the songs are from musicals, either stage or film - Billy Elliot, Godspell, Sister Act, Tarzan, Les Miserables, Wicked, Fiddler, Cats, Blues Brothers, Fame, Jesus Christ Superstar, etc etc etc. My favourite is from Thoroughly Modern Millie, a show I would thoroughly love to watch some day.
The rest of the week promises to be busy - besides the rehearsals, there's still more lyrics, harmonies and choreography I have to memorise - but lots of fun.
And after all that shameless self-promotion, here's the performance details:
The shows are on Friday 1st June at 7:30 (Lm5 and Lm5.75) and Saturday 2nd at 6:30pm (Lm6 and Lm6.75), and they are in aid of SOS Eden. Tickets available from the MCC booking office, 2559 5750/1 or bookings@mcc.com.mt.

Hi Claire!
Awwww, thanks very much! We enjoyed "our" song (and we managed not to mess up the lyrics, lol). The whole thing was so much fun, I'm very glad you enjoyed it too!
Thanks for de-lurking, make yourself at home in the comments, heheh.
